DFU/Recovery Mode

How to put your iPhone or iPad into recovery mode

iPhone 4/4S/5/5S/5C/6/6S (Recovery Mode)

Also for: iPad 2,3,4,mini1,mini2, Air
  1. Turn Off your device if it isn’t off already.
  2. Press and hold down the Home button on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPhone.
  3. Plug the device into your computer and make sure iTunes is running.
  4. Release the Home button when you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen.

At this point iTunes should display an alert saying it’s detected an iPhone and will let you restore your device.

iPhone 4/4S/5/5S/5C/6/6S (DFU Mode)

Also for: iPad 2,3,4,mini1,mini2, Air
  1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the power/lock button for 3 seconds.
  4. Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
  6. After about 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present

iPhone 7/7S (Recovery Mode)

  1. Turn Off your device if it isn’t off already.
  2. Press and hold down the volume down.
  3. Plug the device into your computer and make sure iTunes is running.
  4. Release the volume down button when you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen.

At this point iTunes should display an alert saying it’s detected an iPhone and will let you restore your device.

iPhone 7/7S (DFU Mode)

  1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the power/lock button for 3 seconds.
  4. Hold the power/lock and volume down button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the power/lock button but keep holding the volume down button for 10 more seconds.
  6. After about 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present.

iPhone X/XS/XR/XS Max (Recovery Mode)

  1. Plug your device into your computer and make sure iTunes is running.
  2. Press and hold down the volume up , and the volume down button at the same time.
  3. Release then press the power/lock button until “connect to iTunes” appears on the screen.

At this point iTunes should display an alert saying it’s detected an iPhone and will let you restore your device.

iPhone X/XS/XR/XS Max (DFU Mode)

  1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the power/lock button and for 3 seconds, whilst pressing the power/lock button proceed to hold the volume down button for 10 seconds
  4. Release the side button button but keep holding the volume down button for 10 more seconds.

Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present.
