Every year around O-Week, parents and students walk into the shop asking the same question: "What laptop should I buy for uni?" They've usually already been buried under affiliate-driven "best of" lists written by people who have never opened a laptop, let alone fixed one after it failed.

I've been repairing laptops for 16 years. I see what comes back broken after six months, and what's still running fine after four years. I know which brands use plastic hinge mounts that fatigue and snap, which models solder the RAM so you can never add more, and which ones have fan intakes that clog with backpack lint in a single semester. This guide is built on what actually lands on my bench, not spec sheets and press releases.

What students actually need (it's not a gaming laptop)

Let's kill some myths first. You do not need a dedicated GPU for a general arts, business, science or education degree. You do not need an i7 or Ryzen 7. You do not need 32GB of RAM or a 1TB SSD. Anyone telling you otherwise for those degrees is either upselling you or hasn't priced the repair when it breaks.

Here's what genuinely matters for a laptop that has to last 3–4 years:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or Core Ultra 5 (12th gen or newer) or AMD Ryzen 5 (5000 series or newer). These handle Office, Zoom, a dozen browser tabs and light photo editing without complaint. An i3 or Ryzen 3 feels underpowered inside 18 months.
  • RAM: 16GB minimum, not 8GB. In 2026, Chrome alone eats 4–6GB with a dozen tabs open. Add Zoom, Word, Spotify and a PDF reader and 8GB is gone. Most laptops solder the RAM down, so you cannot add more later. Buy 16GB on day one.
  • Storage: a 512GB SSD. Not a hard drive, not 256GB. 256GB fills up fast once Windows, Office, your course software and a couple of semesters of files are on it. And it must be an SSD: a spinning drive in 2026 belongs in a museum.
  • Screen: 14–16 inches, 1080p (Full HD) minimum. Never buy a 1366×768 panel: text looks blurry and you can't fit two windows side by side.
  • Keyboard: matters more than people think. You'll type essays, notes and code on this thing for years. A mushy, cramped keyboard makes every one of those hours worse.
  • Battery: 8+ hours of real use. Manufacturer claims are always inflated: if they say 10, expect 7–8. Enough to survive a full timetable without hunting for a wall socket. Efficient chips like Intel's Core Ultra "Lunar Lake" line do genuinely go the distance here.
  • Weight: under 1.8kg if it's going to campus every day. Your back will thank you by third year.

What actually breaks in student laptops

This is the section the marketing guides can't write, because they've never had the back off one. After thousands of laptops through the bench, student machines fail in a handful of predictable ways, and every one of them is a buying decision you can dodge.

  • Hinges and screen bezels. The single most common structural failure on cheap consumer laptops. Plastic hinge mounts fatigue from a few thousand open-close cycles and crack, and once the hinge binds it starts tearing the screen bezel and stressing the display cable. We see this on budget 15-inch machines by year two. Metal hinge mounts and business-class chassis almost never do it.
  • Liquid damage. Coffee, water bottles that leaked in the bag, a knocked drink in the library. On most consumer laptops a spill runs straight into the board and it's a new logic board. If it does happen to any laptop, power off immediately and get it in, because corrosion is a clock, and our liquid-damage repair process starts with drying and neutralising before anything else.
  • Swollen batteries. By year three, a lot of cells swell. A swelling battery lifts the trackpad, bows the base and, left long enough, becomes a genuine fire risk in a backpack. If your trackpad has started clicking oddly or the laptop won't sit flat, that's a swollen cell, so stop using it.
  • DC jacks and charge ports. Cheap laptops with a barrel-plug charger wear the jack loose from being knocked while plugged in on a bed or a couch. USB-C charging shrugs off that abuse far better, which is one more reason to favour it.
  • Fan and thermal clog. Backpack lint and dust cake the fan intake and heatsink fins over a couple of years. The laptop gets hot, throttles, and feels slow, and people assume it's "old" when it just needs a strip and clean. This is a big chunk of the "my laptop got slow" jobs we see.

The best student laptop isn't the one with the highest specs. It's the one that's still comfortable to type on, still lasts a day on battery, and still works when you're writing your thesis in fourth year, and cheap to fix on the rare day it isn't.

The picks, by degree

The right laptop depends less on your budget than on what your course actually demands of it. A law student and a mechatronics student have completely different needs, and pretending one machine suits both is how people overspend or under-buy. Prices are current at the time of writing (August 2026) and move week to week, so treat every figure as "around".

Humanities, business, law, arts: write, research, present

If your degree is essays, readings, referencing software, spreadsheets and slide decks, your bottleneck is never the processor. It's the keyboard, the battery and whether the thing survives being carried everywhere. Buy for comfort and portability, not benchmarks.

This is the one I'd steer most students to. It gets the things a writing degree actually leans on right: a genuinely nice 14-inch WUXGA OLED touchscreen that's easy on the eyes through a long reading list, a Core i7 with 16GB of RAM that never blinks at a stack of browser tabs and a PDF, and a 512GB SSD with room for a couple of years of coursework.

The 2-in-1 hinge and the included pen are the quiet wins. Fold it flat and you can annotate lecture slides, mark up a draft, or sketch a diagram straight onto the screen, which is the sort of thing that sounds gimmicky until you're doing it in every tutorial. At roughly 1.4kg it disappears into a bag.

Be clear-eyed on one thing: like nearly every thin laptop now, the RAM is soldered, so the 16GB you buy is the 16GB you keep. That's fine at 16GB, but it's why I won't send anyone out the door with 8GB. The SSD is the one part you can grow later. Keep a cloud sync or an external drive running and this machine will see out a degree comfortably.

If your course runs CAD, MATLAB simulations, big datasets, video editing, 3D modelling or game development, you need headroom the writing crowd doesn't: more screen for two windows side by side, an H-series or Core Ultra processor that won't thermal-throttle, and, for graphics-heavy work, a dedicated GPU.

The 16-inch panel is the whole point for a STEM student running a primary machine. The extra real estate is real when you've got a code editor beside its documentation, or a dataset next to your notes, and the 2K touchscreen folds back to a tablet when you want to read or annotate instead of type.

It runs Intel's Core Ultra 5 "Lunar Lake" chip, which is the interesting part: it's efficient enough for genuine all-day battery, has the on-chip NPU that Windows 11's AI features are built around, and stays quiet under everyday load. Thunderbolt 4 drives a couple of external monitors off one cable when you're at a desk. Integrated graphics mean this isn't the machine for heavy CAD or rendering, that's the Pavilion below, but for coding, maths, writing and multitasking it's plenty.

The M-series MacBook Air is a genuinely excellent machine: all-day battery, silent and fanless, a beautiful screen and the best trackpad in the business. If you can afford it and your course doesn't force Windows-only software on you, it's a fine choice for arts, business or general creative work. Just go in clear-eyed on two things. First, storage and memory are soldered to the chip, and the base 256GB SSD is tight for a four-year degree, so step up to 512GB at purchase because you cannot add it later. Second, repairability is close to zero: a cracked screen or a spilt drink on a MacBook is a repair bill that can approach the cost of the laptop, so budget for AppleCare+ or accept the risk. Buy once: the total-cost-of-ownership math

The sticker price is the worst way to compare laptops you're going to lean on for a degree. What matters is the cost per year of real use: the purchase divided by the years it actually survives, plus whatever it costs to keep running. Do that division and the "cheap" laptop usually stops looking cheap.

Those figures aren't a brochure, they're the pattern I see on the bench. The $600 laptop that dies at year two costs more per year than a $1,300 machine that runs for five and takes a cheap battery in year four. The MacBook can absolutely go the distance, but a single out-of-warranty accident swings its per-year cost hard, because independent shops can't touch the major components. Chromebooks are not real laptops for uni. I say this bluntly because we see students show up to orientation week with a Chromebook and realise they can't install the software their course requires. ChromeOS cannot run Microsoft Office desktop apps, MATLAB, SPSS, AutoCAD, most coding IDEs, or many exam proctoring tools. A Chromebook works for pure web browsing and Google Docs. For everything else, you need a real Windows or macOS laptop.

Common mistakes from the repair shop

The student laptops that land on my bench early usually got there through a buying or usage decision, not bad luck. The ones worth dodging:

  • Buying on sticker price alone. The cheapest laptop is rarely the cheapest to own. I've had students bring in $600 laptops that cost $400 to fix, and $1,000 business machines that cost $80. Cost it per year of use and count the downtime around exams.
  • Settling for 8GB soldered RAM to save $150. You can't add it later on most machines. That's the slow laptop of second year, bought to save a little in first year.
  • No backup on a soldered-storage laptop. When the board fails, the data goes with it. This is the job I most wish people had avoided, because it was avoidable. A cloud sync or an external drive is the cheapest insurance you'll buy, and if it's already too late, that's what data recovery is for.
  • Ignoring a swelling battery. A trackpad that has started to lift, or a laptop that no longer sits flat, is a swollen cell. Stop using it and get it replaced, because it only gets worse, and it's a fire risk in a bag full of paper.
  • Leaving it plugged in and hot all day. That's what swells batteries early. Use the charge-limit or battery-health setting if the laptop has one, and let it cool before it goes back in the sleeve.
