The most expensive failure a hub causes costs the hub nothing. A short-cabled hub left dangling off the side of a laptop, or squashed against it in a bag, works the port's solder joints like a crowbar on a nail. Will a USB-C hub damage my laptop?

A decent hub used sensibly won't. The damage we see comes from two habits: letting a hub hang off the port so its weight levers the solder joints, and feeding the hub from a poor quality wall charger that passes dirty power downstream. Keep the hub flat on the desk with slack in the cable, power it from a genuine branded brick, and the port will outlast the laptop. The hubs in this guide all state their power reserves honestly, which is a reasonable proxy for the rest of the engineering being done properly too.

Why does my laptop discharge while plugged in through the hub?

Add up the numbers. A hub with a 100W input passes through 85 to 95W depending on the model, and it can only pass through what the wall charger supplies. A 45W brick into a hub that reserves 15W leaves about 30W for a laptop that might want 65W under load, so the battery quietly makes up the difference.
